Variety Development PDF Print

Variety development takes place in two stages (hybridization and selection) and is based on genetic research.
To select new varieties, eRcane’s teams have a large germplasm, with multiplication plots, hybridization glasshouses and seven experiment stations in different parts of the island. The great diversity of soil and microclimates found in Reunion Island helps develop varieties
that are well-suited to very different conditions, in Reunion Island but also in other production areas. “R” varieties are now found in many places around the world as eRcane has a vigorous policy for exchanging or supplying cuttings of varieties and fuzz.
eRcane's Germplasm Conservation and Hybridization Department is headed by Audrey Thong-Chane.
The Selection Department is headed by Laurent Barau.
