Variety selection consists in discarding any varieties, among the 100,000 obtained each year from hybridization, which are found to be inferior to the best standard varieties.
The ultimate objective is to develop varieties which generate the highest possible income per hectare, taking the sugar yield per hectare (cane yield x sucrose content) as the most important criterion. The other main selection criteria are ratooning ability and resistance to disease. A new criterion has emerged more recently, which is a variety’s ability to produce biomass that can be used to produce energy.
Selection involves meticulous scientific evaluations based on field trials in eRcane’s 7 selection stations. These take place over a period of 14 years, in two stages: visual selection and experimental selection.
