Technological Quality of Sugarcane PDF Print

In 2007, eRcane launched a research programme designed to identify indicators for the technological quality of sugarcanes. In the industry, the notion of “technological quality” is generally estimated on the basis of sugar content, fibre content and juice purity. However, other parameters appear to play a role in extraction yields, such as suitability for crushing, sugar crystallization, etc., as two sugarcanes with the same sugar content do not necessarily provide the same quantity of extractable sugar. Little is known about the parameters explaining these differences (technical pathways, climates, harvest methods) and they are therefore being explored in the current research programme. The new indicators could be used in variety development and the choice of cultural practice.
