The Sugar Processing Department manages a number of Research and Development programmes, focusing on innovations in factory monitoring and control. The programmes cover:

  • novel analytical methods for sugarcane: ‘pol’ determination without lead, mannitol, organic acids, etc.
  • the characterization of sugarcane quality and its impact on growers’ income and factory performance: sugar losses after harvest, extractable sugar, sugar losses, etc.
  • the development of a computer-assisted system for crystal size analysis of massecuites.
  • computerization of the sugarcane laboratories, with the creation of databases to simplify the entry and interpretation of the results of analyses.
