China, a major sugarcane producer

With a production of 10 million tonnes of sugar, 90% of which is produced from cane, China is a major player in the sugar industry. The province of Guangxi produces 60% of the country’s total volume.

The headquarters of the leading Chinese groups are found in its capital, Nanning. A delegation from Reunion Island (from Cerf and SBR) took part in a joint mission in December 2007, organized by UBIFRANCE and the Canton Economic Mission.

The trip was extremely interesting as we were able to discover all the different facets of the Chinese sugar industry, in the fields and the sugar mills. We received a very warm welcome from all the different players in the local sugarcane sector.
