New Station in South

eRcane has opened a seventh station, Le Gol, in Saint-Louis, alongside Le Gol sugar mill.

With a surface area of approximately 20 hectares, the station has two main objectives:

 1) To introduce a new focus for selection, aimed at identifying varieties which are tolerant to hydric stress. Selection will begin at the “2 row” stage, using “1 row stage” varieties from the Etang Salé station.

 2) To provide eRcane with a second site for propagating new varieties. Growers in the north and eastern regions will continue to be supplied by La Mare, whereas those in the west and south will now go to Le Gol. At end 2009, nearly 5 hectares had been planted with the latest varieties, which will be available for the end of the 2009-2010 planting season and for the 2010-2011 season.
