The aim of hybridization is to create genetic diversity, which is then used as the basis for selecting new varieties.

Hybridization uses the reproductive organs of sugarcane, the inflorescences. 
Sugarcane inflorescences, commonly known as “sugarcane flowers”, are in fact panicles consisting of a multitude of “flowers” (in the botanical sense of the term) and therefore contain a large number of different gametes. When gametes from two panicles of different varieties meet, this creates the genetic diversity required for cane improvement.
The principle of hybridization consists in crossing flowers from two varieties of sugarcane whose traits (high sugar content, high yield, ratooning ability, resistance to disease, high production of biomass, etc.) offer a potentially interesting combination.
